Güimar on Tenerife - where you can touch the history of Tenerife

The village of Güimar lies in the middle of a fertile valley and is one of the most historical places on Tenerife as it was here where Thor Heyerdal discovered the Pyramids of Guimar of which there are many different theories about their original functions. These have been compared to the Egyptian pyramids. These are the oldest legacies out of the Guanchen times before the Spanish Conquest. Güimar was at that time the seat of the king of Tenerife, the Mencey.  The local people are more than aware of their historical responsibility towards him and  show off the relics from the Guanchen times in an interesting museum.  Today there is a lot of agriculture, especially avocados, bananas, guaven, pineapple, tomatoes and chirimoya ( sugar fruit). The wines from this area like Brumas de Ayosa, a white wine of superior quality for only 8 Euros a bottle is considered one of the best in the whole Island. An interesting excursion would be to Park " Malpais", which means bad soil. This is a lava field from where the top of 276m high volcano top " Montaña Grande " rises. Strolling through this volcanic landscape will give you a totally different feeling then going for a stroll in England. Another interesting site is " Cuava Honda ", which was formed by a gas explosion. The cave is 100m deep and runs all the way to the coast.
