La Matanza - fertile northern coast of Tenerife

La Matanza is a neighbouring village of El Sauzal with approx. 8.000 inhabitants of which many are foreigners (mostly German). The land is very fertile and because of the good irrigation system there is a rich growth of vegetation.  In the area you will  find numerous vineyards and banana plantations. Many experts are saying, that the best red wine from the island comes from Acentejo area, to which La Matanza belongs. Starting from La Matanza, you can easily reach the hiking areas as well as  the coast ,but  you definitely need a car as La Matanza lies 400 to 500 m above the sea level on a very rocky coastline. It is advisible to rent a car in Tenerife anyway. The weekly indoor market, which takes place every Saturday and Sunday, is a great attraction to local people and tourists. You´ll be able to find a great variety of typical Canarias products, fruit, vegetables, meat and flowers.
