La Orotava - Tenerife - a fertile valley north of Puerto de la Cruz
La Orotava is a town of around 40.000 inhabitants in the north of Tenerife and lies in the north of Puerto de la Cruz. La Orotava, with its neighbouring villages stretches out to 200 sq km. The town lies in the world-known Orotava valley that was once described by the famous natural scientist Alexander von Humboldt as the most beautiful valley of the world . The town itself has many historical houses and could easily be described as the most beautiful municipality on the island. Particularly worth seeing in the historical old town is the west side with its many narrow alleys in typical Canarias style. You will find there the old town hall . Decorated with flowers, Plaza de la Constitucion is a popular meeting place for local people as well as tourists. It is worth having a look at all the churches and chapels, especially Iglesia Santo Domingo with its painted ceiling panels. Don’t miss the monastic church of Santo Domingo as it has many art exhibitions. The baroque church Iglesia de la Concepcion is found on Plaza Casanas. This church is particularly beautiful on the outside with its towers and fantastic dome.
