Masca is a tiny mountain village, counting about 100 inhabitants and nested in a unique landscape with breathtaking views over the mountains of Teno. It lies at an altitude of 800 m. Masca used to be an agricultural village but the young people left and nowadays Masca lives on tourism. Around a million tourists come to visit the village every year, so about 10.000 times more than its number of inhabitants. Now there are some restaurants and one bar, so you will be looked after if you come for a visit. Don´t miss a trip to Masca if you are on holiday on Tenerife. Masca is the starting point for one of the most famous hiking tours of the island to the gorge of Masca, Barranco de Masca. Walkers make their way down the Barranco right to the bay at the bottom which has a beautiful beach. The walk takes two and a half to three hours. Well - trained hikers can choose to return the same way, but normally there is a pre-arranged boat which makes the ten minute journey back to Los Gigantes.
